Mavis McMurray Smith, age 87, formerly of Water Valley, MS died Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at Senatobia Convalescent Center in Senatobia, MS. She was born May 1, 1928 in Franklin County, AL to the late William Clarence and Mary Walker McMurray.

Mavis was an RN and retired from St. Joseph Hospital in Memphis, TN. Her retirement was short-lived as she moved to Water Valley and began her second nursing career at Yalobusha General Hospital where she worked until the age of 73. Mavis was an active and faithful member of Sylva Rena Baptist Church where she served as a choir member and in any area where she could minister to others.

Over the years she went on three medical missions; and as long as she was able, spent every Sunday afternoon at the nursing home visiting with the residents and singing to them, especially, “Jesus Loves Me”. Mavis enjoyed fishing, gardening and spending time with her family and friends.

Visitation will be held Friday, April 15, 2016 from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley, MS. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 2:00 pm on Friday in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks with Bro. James West officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Crest Memorial Garden Cemetery in Yalobusha County, MS with Jeff Albritton, Blake Graves, Michael Stevens, Roy Bennett Stevens, Edwin Bonner, James Person, Joe Pullen and Jimmy Berry serving as pallbearers.

Mavis is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Fay Reeder of Cordova, TN and Sherilyn Kay (Randy) Broome of Memphis, TN; her son, James Ray (Edie) Smith, Jr. of Coldwater, MS; four grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, James Ray Smith, Sr.
