Obituary

Worcester - John R. Sundquist, 86, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2016, at UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus. His wife of 50 years, Lois E. (Sund) Sundquist, died in 2005. He leaves his beloved children and grandchildren: son and daughter-in-law Bruce and Michelle Sundquist, with whom he lived, their children Andrew, Benjamin, Julie, and Joshua, and Ajax, his furry friend; two daughters and a son-in-law Brenda and Tom Welch and their children Amanda, Michael, and Brianna of Shrewsbury and Beth A. Sundquist of Pompano Beach, Florida; a sister- and brother-in-law Judy and Don Nelson; nieces Donna Nordquist and Jennifer Rotigliano; nephew Donald Nelson; and dear friend Linda Bergman.
Jack was born and raised in Worcester, only child of Swedish immigrants, John E. and Ingeborg M. (Gustafson) Sundquist. He was a graduate of North High and Becker Jr. College. He also attended WPI’s School of Management. He served in the Army National Guard for six years. Jack retired from Norton Company in 1991 after 41 dedicated years of service. He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church and served as Treasurer for many years. Jack was a member of Morning Star Lodge A.F. & A.M. and Scottish Rite and the Greendale Retired Men’s Club. He served for 39 years on the Swedish Cemetery Corporation’s Board of Directors (1967-2006) and also the Worcester Swedish Charitable Association’s Board of Directors. He enjoyed many cruises and excursions, golfing, cribbage and poker games, and spending time on Cape Cod and at his summer home “Beach Acres” in Wells, Maine.
Jack’s family extends their thanks and appreciation to Lakeside 3 Heart & Vascular ICU for the compassionate care they provided during his hospital stay.
A memorial service will be held in Zion Lutheran Church, 41 Whitmarsh Avenue on Saturday, April 9, at 10:00 a.m. Following the service, burial of ashes will be in All Faiths Cemetery, 9 Island Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield MA 01104-2396 or Zion Lutheran Church, 41 Whitmarsh Ave., Worcester MA 01606.
