Obituary

John J. Russell of Marstons Mills, Massachusetts died peacefully on Monday January 11, 2016 after a brief illness. The son of the late Corneilius “Neil” Russell and the late Catherine Nagle, John Russell was born and raised in South Boston, Massachusetts, where he was a graduate of Gate of Heaven High School.

A veteran of the United States Army, Russell enjoyed a long and respected career as a banker at The Bank of Boston, State Street and Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge. He also volunteered his time at the Knights of Columbus and Consumer Assistance Council, Inc.

Russell loved Cape Cod, Florida and the White Mountains of New Hampshire and enjoyed gardening and traveling with his beloved companion Ginny de Veer. Known as “Poppa” to his four grandchildren, he always had a bright smile and a warm welcome to share with all who knew him. He was an expert at do-it-yourself projects before they became trendy and loved taking his grandkids on rides in his Jeep.

Russell was quick to help those in need, whether it was escorting a sick friend to the doctor’s office or providing guidance and advice to consumers and organizations that he supported.

Russell is survived by his fiancé Virginia “Ginny” de Veer of Plymouth, Massachusetts, daughters Laura Sherman of Marshfield, Massachusetts and Denise Judge of Scituate, Massachusetts, a son Michael Russell of Centerville, Massachusetts, former wife Ann Russell of Marshfield, Massachusetts, sister Katherine Moynihan and husband Robert Moynihan of New York, New York, and granddaughters Isabella Sherman and Mia Sherman of Marshfield, Massachusetts and Neila Judge and Moneen Judge of Scituate, Massachusetts.
