Obituary

Boylston - Alden H. Gates, 94, passed away January 3, 2016 at D'Youville Sr. Care of Lowell. His wife of 63 years, Ruth A. (Brigham) Gates died in 2010. He leaves two sons, Wayne A. Gates and his wife Carole of Natick and Craig A. Gates and his partner Brenda Maille of Lowell; six grandchildren: Ryan, Casey, Molly, Kristen, Michael, and Matthew Gates; one brother, Richard Gates and his wife Jean of Boylston; as well as several nieces and nephews. A brother Warren Gates and sister-in-law Joanne predeceased him.

Born in Worcester, Alden was the son of the late Anna E. (Pope) and Howard A. Gates. He was a graduate of Commerce High and the New England School of Accounting. Alden was a WWII veteran. He served in the Coast Guard aboard the USCGC USS Manhasset and was honorably discharged Gunner's Mate 2nd Class. Alden was an accountant for Sentry Insurance of Concord for 36 years, retiring 32 years ago. He was a member of the West Boylston Lodge A.F. & A.M. Alden was a commissioner for the Boylston Light and Water Department for more than 30 years. He enjoyed the beach, traveling, and spending time with his family, friends, and grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Boylston, Friday, January 8, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Congregational Church, 10 Church St., Boylston MA 01505. Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St., Worcester is directing arrangements.
