Dr. Speros P. "Steve" Nemphos, 85, of Clinton, died, Tuesday, November 24th in St. Mary's Health Care Center, with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Ann (Chakalis) Nemphos and their children, George S. Nemphos of Springfield, Stephen S. Nemphos and his wife, Kathleen of Wilbraham, Phyllis Ann Shoemaker and her husband, Timothy of Redondo Beach, CA, William P. Galatis and Angela Nogueira of Saugus, Christine Cavallo and her husband, Michael of Stoneham, Karen Smith and her husband, William of Arlington, Lisa Kalfopoulos and her husband, Michael of Winchester; his brother, Angelo Nemphos and his wife, Artemis of Southington, CT; two sisters, Helen Ladas and her husband, Gregory of Meriden, CT and Penelope Karageorge of Arlington; 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
He was born in Bronx, NY the son of William and Philanthe (Exarhakos) Nemphos and grew up in Greece. Dr. Nemphos received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware. He retired as the head of Research and Design, for the Plastics Division of Monsanto. Steve then had worked for Nova in Canada and later for the Shell Oil Company in Houston. Dr. Nemphos was a pioneer in the plastics industry, holding nearly 100 U.S. and foreign patents. He also authored and co-authored numerous technical articles and publications. Steve was a member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, its Seniors Group, the Order of AHEPA, and also the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Somerville. He will be remembered as a humble man, who enjoyed time spent with his family and playing tennis.
His funeral is Saturday, November 28th at 11:00 a.m. in O'CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, Worcester. Calling hours will be held from 9:00 until the time of the funeral, Saturday morning.
