Rev. John William Lyon, age 88, died Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford, MS. He was born June 23, 1927 in Pontotoc, MS to the late John Thomas and Blanch Dillard Lyon. Prior to becoming a pastor, Bro. Lyon worked for Bell South in Memphis, TN where he retired after 30 years of service. He loved serving the Lord and pastored several churches over a span of thirty years in Tallahatchie County, Water Valley and Oxford. Bro. Lyon was a member of Woodland Hills Baptist Church in Water Valley, MS where he was faithful to fill the pulpit whenever he was called upon. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed fishing, hunting and woodworking.
Visitation will be held Saturday, November 14, 2015 from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley, MS. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 2:00 pm in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks, with Bro. Lynn Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Water Valley, with Travis York, Andy Grass, Spencer Lyon, John Summers, Doug Summers, Mike Lyon, Steve Lyon and Alan Cagle serving as pallbearers. Rev. Lyon is survived by his wife of 67 years, Bettye Jean Cooper Lyon of Oxford, MS; his daughter, Sharon (John) Summers of Atlanta, GA; two sons, Mike (Cindy) Lyon of Bartlett, TN and Steve Lyon of Memphis, TN; his sister, Martha (Norm) Bull of VA; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Gene Lyon and Jim Lyon. | ||||
