Obituary

HOLDEN-John J.(Jack) Hanlon of Holden, died November 5, 2015. He was born March 21, 1928 in Worcester, the son of Beatrice (LaLiberte) and Joseph D. Hanlon Sr.

He leaves his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth A. (Jardus) Hanlon; one son, John J. Hanlon Jr. and his wife Mary of St. Petersburg, FL; four daughters, Dr. Kathleen A. Hanlon O’Connell and her husband Joseph of Clinton Corners, N.Y., Nancy J. Hanlon of Worcester, Susan E. Hanlon of Beverly, and Patricia M. Hanlon of Oxford. Jack also leaves eight grandchildren, Eric Hanlon, Christopher Hanlon, Michelle Davidson-Schapiro, Timothy Hanlon, Kelly Carr, William Davidson, Michael Vayda, Steven Vayda and two great-grandchildren. He is pre-deceased by his parents, his brothers Joseph D. Hanlon Jr., Thomas F. Hanlon and two sisters Mary C. Topor and Joan A. Houston.

Jack attended St. Peter’s High School in Worcester and fulfilled his high school obligation in the U.S. Army where he served for two enlistments, 1946-1948 and 1950-1953. He was a postal specialist stationed in Hawaii and was active operating the Army Post Office in Guadalcanal. His second tour of duty was in Germany and France.

Jack was always active in sports, playing sand-lot ball in his younger years and playing left field for the Fort Dix baseball team while serving in the Army. He was a manager for the Ty Cobb Little League for five years and four years for the Babe Ruth League. He was also very active in the competitive swimming of his daughters. Jack was a former member of Hillcrest Country Club and ran the Our Lady of the Angels Golf League there for many years. He was instrumental in developing the Knight’s of Columbus Senior Golf League at Leicester Country Club and was involved in that operation for seventeen years. As a member of the K of C, Alhambra Council #88, he was an active bowler, candlepins and ten pins. He was an avid Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins and Patriots fan and enjoyed watching the Professional Golf Tournaments.

Throughout his career he was employed in a management capacity in the computer field by the American Steel and Wire, Suprenant Wire and Cable (I.T.T.), Holy Cross College, Mechanics National Bank, and retired from Harrington Richardson in Gardner, MA. He was also a tax consultant and provided services for Massad Movers for over fifty-six years. In his retirement he worked in the Pro Shop at Leicester Country Club for over seventeen years.

The family wishes to thank all the doctors who have been caring for Jack, and also the compassionate staff members of the Progressive Care Unit of St. Vincent Hospital.

Friends and family are invited to attend calling hours on Sunday, November 8 from 3:00-6:00 P.M. at CALLAHAN FAY & CASWELL Funeral Home, 61 Myrtle St., Worcester. The funeral will be held on Monday, November 9 at 10:00 A.M. at St. George Church, 38 Brattle St., Worcester. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery.
