Annah Silsby Lincoln, Yale University Retiree

Annah Silsby Lincoln, a retired administrator at Yale University, passed away peacefully on November 2nd at the age of 99 in Osterville, Ma. She was the daughter of the late Leon Emory Lincoln and the late Mary Louise Shute Lincoln. Her Stepmother was the later Mary Alice Galligan Lincoln. She was raised in Taunton, Ma with five brothers.
After completing the academic course at Taunton High School she attended Salem College in Winston Salem, NC and Larson College (now part of Quinnipiac University ) in Hamden, CT.
During the war years she worked at Reed and Barton as a secretary. After three years with the company, she moved to New Haven, CT where she was Assistant Secretary-Treasurer of the Institute of Traffic Engineers at Yale University. After six years, she became Managing Editor of “Traffic Engineering” magazine, a national publication of the ITE.
She transferred to the Yale English Department as their Business Manager in 1958, where she remained for eleven years .
Miss Lincoln was challenged by the opportunity to become Business Manager of the Yale Child Study Center and transferred from the the campus over to the Medical School and retired in 1978, after thirty one years at Yale.
Among other achievements in her busy life, she was Editor of the Larson College Alumni Magazine. She did volunteer work in the Department of Pediatrics at Yale-New Haven Hospital, and was on the vestry of Grace Episcopal Church in Hamden, CT, where she was a member for many years.
She received the Distinguished Alumni award for Quinnipiac University on October 13, 2001.
She was very active in genealogy and was a direct descendant of Richard Warren and Thomas Rogers, passengers on the Mayflower in 1620.
She was also descended from the Thomas Lincoln, George Hall and Walter Deane, all of whom were original settlers of Taunton, Ma.
Miss Lincoln was a member of the Mayflower Society, the Colonial Dames of America, The Colonial Dames of XVII Century, the First Families of Mass., the Thayer Families Association, the Bartlett Society, the DAR, the National Society Daughters of 1812, the National Society of Daughters of the American Colonists, the National Society of New England Women, and a life member of the old Colony Historical Society of Taunton.
At Yale she was called a good Samaritan for her many kind deeds and her interest in the well-being of young people. She will have given seven scholarships for worthy students to various colleges. She saw firsthand the importance of scholarship aid when students worked for her at Yale.
She found, at the University, a microcosm of the world, all of the needs, all of the love, all of the joy and all of the relationships necessary to sustain her life and make it worthwhile. She was not famous but with quiet dignity she touched the lives of many students, professors, family members and friends with her sincere compassion and caring. She was energized in her service to others.
She loved young people and especially her large family of brothers and their children.
When Ann retired, she lived five months on Cape Cod and seven months in Melbourne Shores, Florida. At this time she became very interested in genealogy and began a long and tedious job of proving her ancestry. She also had more time to work with abandoned animals and was a life member of the Humane Society of South Brevard, Melbourne, Florida. She was very generous in helping Leo Grillo, founder of DELTA rescue, in California.
Ann leaves eleven loving nieces and nephews, several grand nieces and nephews along with many great grand nieces and nephews. Predeceased are her 5 bothers, Deanne Shute Lincoln who died in 1995, Robert B. Lincoln who died in 1998, Leon Emory Lincoln (Lt. Col retired) who died in 1999, John W. Lincoln ( Col. USMC) died in 2000 and Martyn H. Lincoln died in 2004. She is survived by her sister in law Jean Lincoln who resides in Norton along with her cousin Nancy Beers LeRoy of Keene, NH.

A Service will be held at St Thomas Episcopal Church, 111 High Street in Taunton Friday, November 6 at 10 AM. Interment will be held at Winicunett Cemetery in Norton.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Ann’s name to the Humane Society or VNA/Hospice of Cape Cod.
