Obituary

OXFORD-Marie C. (Bregola) Shaw, Thorpe, Carney, 94, “Nana” called by many who loved and knew her, passed in her daughter’s home surrounded by family on October 22, 2015 in Oxford, MA where she lived for the last fifteen years.

She was born in Worcester on November 15, 1920 to the late Annie O’Malley Bregola and the late Elmer Bregola Briggs. She resided in Boston, North Abington and returned to Worcester in 1960.

Marie leaves behind five children; Kenneth Shaw and his wife Elsie of Taunton, Judith Conant and her husband Michael of Oxford, Darlene Haglund of Oxford, Donna Anderson and her husband Robert of Spencer and Forrest Thorpe, Jr of Hyannis; a sister Doris Simonelli and her husband Robert of Shrewsbury; a brother Robert Briggs of New York, NY. She also leaves behind 18 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husbands, Kenneth Shaw, Forrest Thorpe, Sr. and Edward Carney; two brothers, Phillip and Alfred Bregola; two sisters, Agnes Dillon and Rita Hall; a son-in-law Robert Haglund, a daughter-in-law Susan Thorpe, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.


Marie was a Laundry Supervisor at the prior Heywood Valley Nursing Home and retired in the early 80’s. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. Marie loved listening to music, playing games, cards, cooking, camping, dancing, trips to Cape Cod and California, having a garden...loved flowers, especially red roses, and butterflies.


The family would like to thank Dr. Wilfrid Pitts for his care and support for over 20 years, Doctor Joseph Cohen, III and the staff at the Central MA VNA, Tri Valley, Inc, and Independent Home Care: Lynne, Michelle, Jeanine, Denise, Missy, Anne, Marilyn, Allison, Tammy, Brenda, Kim, Paula Powers Borci, Starlette Troy Coleman, Linda Faneuf and Linda Murphy.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 27 from CALLAHAN FAY & CASWELL Funeral Home, 61 Myrtle Street, Worcester with Mass at 10:00 AM at St Roch’s Church, 332 Main Street, Oxford. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours are Monday, October 26 from 4-7pm at the funeral home.
