Charlton
Herbert C. Stevens, 83, passed away Friday, October 16, 2015 at home with his family by his side.
Born in Charlton on January 28, 1932. He was the son of the late Clarence N. and Helen M. (Clark) Stevens.
Herbert graduated from the former Charlton High School in 1949. He received his Bachelor of science degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1954, where he was a member of the U.S. Air Force ROTC. He was honorably discharged from the USAF in 1956 as an airman 2nd class. He worked as an educator at the Norfork County Agricultural School for 9 years, the former Charlton High School for 8 years, and Bay Path Regional Vocational High School for 16 years. He retired in 1989 to fulfill his lifelong dream of farming full time. It was important to him to preserve the rural character of Charlton.
He served on the first Charlton Conservation Commission. He also was honored by the Charlton Old Home Day Committee by receiving the Community Service Award in 2002 for his services to the citizens and Town of Charlton as a farmer, teacher, community servant and family man. “The individual who did them all, at one time.”
He leaves his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth M. ‘Betty’(Seale) Stevens and his children, Daniel S. Stevens and his wife Holly of Charlton, and Janice A. Pena and her husband Juan ‘Carlos’ Pena of Southbridge, 3 grand-daughters, Ashley C. Stevens of Sturbridge, Chandler Stevens and Madison Stevens both of Charlton and one great grandson, Brody Knight of Sturbridge, 2 brothers, David C. Stevens of Morrisville, VT., and Philip J. Stevens of Charlton and several nieces and nephews.
There are No Calling Hours.
A Memorial Service will be Saturday, October 24, 2015 at 1PM in the ROBERT J. MILLER-CHARLTON FUNERAL HOME, 175 Old Worcester Rd.
Burial will be at a later date in West Ridge Cemetery.
