Obituary

John L. Correia, Jr., 85, of New Bedford died October 11, 2015 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late John and Mary (Mendes) Correia, he lived in Providence and Boston before returning to New Bedford.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Mr. Correia was formerly employed as a funeral assistant with Burgo Funeral Home.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Cape Verdean American Veterans Association.
Survivors include Louise Ramos of New Bedford who was John's beloved soulmate, companion and care giver for 36 years; his children, Johnny Williams of Colorado, Andrea Wheeler of Providence, Lorna Correia of Freetown, Johanna Correia of New Bedford and John D. Correia and his wife Kenarda of Elizabeth City, VA; his step-children, Genevieve Houtman of New Bedford, Diane Cruz and her husband Edward, Toni Marie Grace and her husband Allen, and Deborah Ramos, all of New Bedford; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews including Perry "Tiny" Tavares.
He was the step-father of the late Gordon Ramos, the father-in-law of the late Dwayne Lassiter, the brother of the late Arcenia Mae Pina and brother-in-law of the late Thomas Pina.
His Funeral will be held on Friday, October 16th at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Thursday, October 15th from 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472.
