WORCESTER: Rev. Peter J. Scanlon, 84, a Roman Catholic Priest of the Worcester Diocese for 58 years, died on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus. He leaves his sister, former Assistant City Manager for the City of Worcester, Peggyann T. Scanlon of Shrewsbury; as well as his many friends and brother Priests. He was born and raised in Worcester, son of the late Peter and Julia J. “Sheila” (O’Sullivan) Scanlon. He graduated from St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury, Holy Cross College in Worcester and St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, MD with an S.T.L. degree.
Fr. Pete was ordained to the Priesthood by Bishop John J. Wright on May 30, 1957 at St. Paul’s Cathedral. He served in several parishes of the diocese before being named Diocesan Director of the Newman Apostolate. He was then named pastor of the former Our Lady of Fatima Church on Belmont Street in 1976. He also served as Chaplain of the Worcester Fire Department for 45 years and was the full time Campus Minister at Worcester Polytechnic Institute for more than 20 years.

A CALLING HOUR will be held from 10 to 11 A.M. on TUESDAY, SEPT. 29 in IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH, 353 Grove St., Worcester, followed by a FUNERAL MASS to be celebrated at 11 A.M. Bishop Robert J. McManus will be the principal celebrant. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Worcester. Donations in memory of Fr. Pete may be made to the Clergy Benefit Plan, 40 Brattle St., Worcester, MA 01606-2511.
