Obituary


George Barber, age 91, died on September 19, 2015 at the Plymouth Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, following a long illness. He was the devoted husband of Marion Barber for 64 years. Born in Boston on October 16, 1923, George served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Denebola, in the Pacific Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, as a welder. He returned to civilian duty at the Watertown Arsenal, where he became an inspector, and later, at Hanscom AIr Force Base. Upon retirement, George moved his family to their summer home in Manomet. With a keen eye for detail, and a steady hand, George was an horologist, meticulously repairing fine watches. George was the loving and proud father of Paul George Barber, George Michael Barber and his wife Cynthia, and Sheila Sadler and her husband Russell, all of Manomet, and Carolyn Barber of Plymouth. He was the beloved brother of Helen Barber of Manomet, and the late Harry Barber. George was the cherished grandfather of 7 and great-grandfather of 3. A visitation will take place Thursday Sept. 24th followed by a memorial funeral service in the Davis Funeral and Cremation Home, 619 State Road, Manomet, with the Reverend Paul Aveni officiating, followed by a Celebration of Life until 7 PM. Interment will be private, at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to www.dav.org, the Disabled American Veterans.
