Obituary

Wawena Harper Vickers, 91, of Wray, Georgia, died Sunday, August 30, 2015, at Palemon Gaskins Memorial Nursing Home in Ocilla, Georgia.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Wednesday, September 2, 2015, at Satilla Baptist Church, in Irwin County, with the Rev. William Pope and the Rev. Craig Barnette officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Tuesday evening at the funeral home in Ocilla.

Mrs. Vickers was born October 10, 1923, in Irwin County, Georgia, to the late Gilbert and Alma Mixon Harper. She lived in the community all of her life and was a homemaker and a farm wife. Mrs. Vickers loved to cook and enjoyed watching friends and family enjoy her dishes. She was a very active member of Satilla Baptist Church having served as church clerk and organized the food for Vacation Bible School for many years. She was the oldest living member of her church. Mrs. Vickers lived to serve her church and her family.

She is survived by her daughter and sons-in-law: Marilyn & George Cook of Ocilla and W.A. Carver of Wray; grandchildren: Loye & William Pope, Tracy & Jeffery Smith, Tony & Karen Vickers, Beverly & James Griffin, W.A. & Susan Carver, Jr., David & Regina Cook, Dennis & Kelly Cook, and Dixie & Brett Sherrod; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Karleen Paulk. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Lloyd Vickers; a daughter, Amelia Vickers Carver; a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne & Sandra Vickers; and a great-grandson, Cody Pope.

The family wishes to acknowledge the staff of Palemon Gaskins as well as the nurses and staff of Hospice Care Options for the attentive care they provided to Mrs. Vickers.
