Obituary

In Sandwich, July 7, 2015, Alfred Cornaglia, Age 93 passed away in the McCarthy Care Center following a brief period of declining health. Alfred was born in Taunton, MA the son of the late Eugene and Mary (O’Neil) Cornaglia, natives of Piancerrato, Italy. He was raised along with his brother Claude Cornaglia in the former brickyard section of Taunton. He was a member of Taunton High School class of 1941, where he was a unanimous choice for footballs all Bristol County left end and stamped as one of best receivers in the area. He was awarded an athletic scholarship to play at Columbia University. In the spring of 1942 Alfred married Gertrude O’Neil also of Taunton. They had three sons Fredrick and David of Taunton and Jeffrey of Berkley, MA Also a daughter the late Eileen Baptiste who lost a hard battle with cancer. Alfred was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the 406th Infantry Regiment Medical Detachment. He was involved in the Battle of the Bulge in Europe’s Rhineland. He was awarded a bronze star and a purple heart for his service. He became a registered pharmacist and worked for 43 years at various former pharmacies in the Peoples Drug, Dunnington’s, Hanson’s and Mulhern’s pharmacy before retiring in 1991. He enjoyed gardening, maintaining his yard and watching the Boston sports teams and local politics on television. He also enjoyed Sunday family dinners, holidays and time spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Some of his best times were spent traveling with family for visits to Fort Myers Beach, Florida. He was also fond of peaceful times spent at home listening to classical music. Alfred’s funeral services are private at the request of the family.
