7/9/2015

Edith Burgess Nichols, age 91, died Thursday, July 9, 2015 at her home in Oakland, MS surrounded by family. She was born January 14, 1924 in Memphis, TN to the late John Thomas and Nora Lee Butler Burgess. Edith was a 1942 graduate of Bartlett High School and married Cecil “Nick” Nichols on April 10, 1943. They enjoyed 67 years together until Nick passed away in August, 2010. A devout member of the Church of Christ throughout her life, Edith taught First Grade Sunday School at Coleman Avenue Church of Christ in Memphis for 20 years. When Nick retired they moved to the Oakland, MS area near Enid Lake where she joined Ford’s Well Church of Christ. Edith was a very supportive wife and active mother. While her children attended Treadwell School in Memphis, she volunteered with the Parent Teacher Association serving as President, and was awarded a life membership in the Tennessee PTA for her long years of service. After her children finished school, Edith attended Memphis Vocational School and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. For ten years she worked at Methodist Central Hospital in the urology department until her retirement. Her nursing knowledge played an important role in the care she provided her daughter, Nancy; sister, Evelyn; and husband, Nick during their last days. Edith enjoyed skating, sewing, gardening, crocheting and swimming in the lake. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved bringing her grandchildren down to spend weekends at the lake.
