Obituary

Augusta, Georgia — CW4(Ret U.S. Army) Joviniano Colón, age 87, died June 24th at the Charles Norwood VA Hospital from complications of Parkinson’s Disease.
Funeral services with full military honors will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 27,2015 at Platt’s Belair Road Chapel. Interment to follow in Bellevue Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Colón is survived by his wife, Elvira Duran, and four children: George Henry Colón Durán, Odette E. Colón, Julio E. Colón, and Maritza I. Crawford. He also leaves behind three grandchildren, James E. Atakoglu, Christina D. Crawford, and Gabriela N. Crawford.
Mr. Colón is a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he earned several medals, including the The Legion of Merit, The Bronze Star Medal, The Meritorious Service Medal, The Joint Service Commendation Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal. He served 32 years in the U.S. Army which included four U.S., three European, and two Latin American tours. He retired from the U.S. Army in November 1, 1980.
Mr. Colón was always an avid learner and believer in higher education. He completed his Masters of Science in Education from the University of Southern California in 1975 after two consecutive tours in Vietnam.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the National Parkinson Foundation, attn. Gift Processing Center, P.O. Box 5018, Hagertown, MD, 21741-5018.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening, June 26, 2015 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
