Obituary


Thomas J. McGrath, Sr., 80, of Auburn, passed away May 11, 2015 after a short battle with multiple forms of cancer, at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack.
He was born on January 8, 1935, in Boston, MA, the son of Laurence and Gertrude (Mahoney) McGrath. Tom served in the US Army, during the Korean War, as an infantry man. He was employed with, and retired from, Honeywell as a systems analyst for nearly four decades.
Tom was a devoted family man and faithful follower of Christ. Tom’s passion for his family and of athletics was displayed in his dedication to both. He has been acknowledged for his service and dedication to sports by numerous organizations, such as the B.A.A., A.A.U. and N.H.I.A.A. He was recognized as “The Voice of New Hampshire” for his Public Announcement work at local and regional meets. Tom helped to establish the Tri-county Little League, in the greater Pittsfield, NH area, in the early 1970’s and Auburn Little League in the latter part of that decade. His work with the B.A.A. was prominent at the Boston Marathon in the 1970’s and 80’s. As busy as Tom was with his endeavors, he always found time to attend at least some portion of the school events of his fourteen children.
Tom was predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years, Patricia (Maloney) McGrath, in 2007.
He is survived by fourteen children, twenty six grandchildren, one great grandchild, and one brother. Tom will be missed, but the influence he has had on thousands of athletes throughout the state, region and world will keep his memory alive.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at St. Peter Church, 567 Manchester Rd., Auburn. Burial followed in Auburn Village Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Community Hospice House, 7 Executive Park Drive, Merrimack, NH, 03054.
