Harold I. “Harry” Balkcom, age 83, of Norton, passed away in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, February 5, 2015. He was the beloved husband of Ellen J. (Terry) Balkcom.
Born in Cumberland, Rhode Island on February 2, 1932, he was a son of the late Harold and Florence (Moore) Balkcom.
Harry grew up and was educated in Lincoln, Rhode Island. During the Korean Conflict he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army; stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged on April 17, 1952 with the rank of SGT (4).
Prior to retiring, Mr. Balkcom had been employed as a custodian for the over 10 years at the Willett Elementary School in Attleboro. Following retirement, he had worked part time at Normandy Farms Campground in Foxboro.
Harry’s favorite times spent were those with his adoring family; especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed engaging in outdoor activities, which included fishing, camping, swimming, and boating.
A resident of Norton for the past 55 years, he was an avid New England Patriots fan and when younger enjoyed target shooting.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his devoted children: David P. Balkcom and his wife Donna of Hanson, Diana B. Reitan and her husband Chris of Cary, Illinois and Oliver T. VanHise of Raymond, Maine. He was the cherished grandfather of D.J., Cheryl, Jamie, Stacy, Joshua and Maya. He is also survived by 9 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and his faithful friend “Reese”. He was pre-deceased by 3 sisters and 1 brother.
Visiting hours, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Sunday, February 8th from 2:00-5:00 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home, 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Community Visiting Nurse Agency, 10 Emory St., Attleboro, MA 02703.
