Obituary

Holmes, Bernard E. of Plymouth passed away at the Newfield House on January 15th, 2015, at age 88. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth “Bette” (Madden) Holmes of Plymouth for 48 years, and the brother of Eldora Courtney of Plymouth, and the late Ashley Holmes of Plymouth.
Mourning his loss are his children, Joanne Holmes and husband Anthony Mayo of Plymouth, Bernard Holmes Jr. and wife Polly of Plymouth, John Holmes and wife Christina of Kingston, and Seth Holmes and wife Caren of Plymouth. He will be especially missed by his grandchildren Jake, Eliza, Owen, Summer, and Sophie, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bernard was born on September 12, 1926 in Plymouth, the son of Ernest and Susan (Finney) Holmes. A 1944 graduate of Plymouth High School, he served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during WWII, and was a member of the American Legion Post 40 in Plymouth. He was well-known locally as a self-employed contractor of B.E. Holmes Excavating and an Ocean Spray cranberry grower-owner. Bernard will be remembered as an avid outdoorsman, who loved working on his cranberry bogs, spending time at the pond with his family, hunting in Plymouth and Maine, traveling, and following auto racing.
Visiting hours will be held at the Richard Davis Funeral Home 619 State Road (Rte. 3A) Plymouth (Manomet) on Friday, January 23rd from 3:00 to 7:00 PM. A memorial service will be held at the Chiltonville Congregational Church 6 River St. Plymouth, MA on Saturday, January 24th at 11am. A private Burial will take Place at South Pond Cemetery in Plymouth. In lieu of flowers donations in Bernard’s memory can be made to Thrifty Pilgrim Food Pantry at 36 Cordage Park Circle, Suite 109, Plymouth, MA 02360 or a charity of your choice.
