Richard G. Horton, age 90, of Wareham, a former longtime resident of Mansfield, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at the Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation at Eagle Pond in Dennis, MA.
Born in Taunton, MA on November 14, 1924, he was a loving son of the late Carlton S. and Mary A. (Waterman) Horton. He grew up in Mansfield and was a 1942 graduate of Mansfield High School.
Following graduation, Richard proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy during WWII. After honorably being discharged, he attended Boston Art School, and later served his country again in the United States Navy during the Korean War.
Prior to retiring, Mr. Horton had worked for many years as a self-employed Sales Representative.
Active in community affairs, Richard was a former active member of the Congregational Church in Mansfield where he served on numerous committees throughout the years. His other memberships included being a former member and past president of the Mansfield Rotary Club, St. James Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Mansfield, and was a past president of the Mansfield Citizens Scholarship Foundation.
As a youth Richard was active in the Boy Scouts and rose to the rank of Eagle Scout. As an adult he passed along his love of scouting; serving as a Scout Master for Troop 17 in Mansfield. He was recognized for many years of faithful service with the distinction of being a Silver Beaver recipient.
He is survived by his devoted children; David C. Horton and his wife Carol of Ennis, Montana; Jeffrey A. Horton of East Providence, Rhode Island; Priscilla J. Simon and her husband Richard of South Yarmouth; Carolyn J. Cass and her husband Michael of West Hartford, Connecticut; and Elizabeth A. Jones and her husband Steven of Allen, Texas. He is also survived by his cherished 10 grandchildren, Meredith, Jennifer, Elaine, Grant, Christina, Emily, Gregory, Evelyn, Thomas, and David, his six great grandchildren, and his former wife, Marion D. Horton of East Dennis.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a memorial service in the Mansfield Congregational Church, 17 West St., Mansfield, which will be held at a later date and time to be announced.
Visiting hours are omitted and those wishing may remember Richard with a donation in his memory made to the Mansfield Citizens Scholarship Foundation, P.O. Box 23, Mansfield, MA 02048.
