Obituary

Doris Elizabeth Jay, 95, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Friday, December 12, 2014, at Pruitt Health in Fitzgerald.

Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Monday, December 15, 2014, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald, with Pastor John Weaver and the Rev. Allen Peacock officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6, Sunday evening, at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.

Mrs. Jay was born October 19, 1919, in Fitzgerald, to the late Frank & Ella Jarchow Young. After the death of her mother, Ella, in 1920, she was adopted by James C. and Alice Barrentine Chalker. She lived in the community all of her life and was a 1938 graduate of Fitzgerald High School. Mrs. Jay received her nurses training at Grady Hospital in Atlanta and was a former LPN with the Ben Hill County Hospital in Fitzgerald. She enjoyed working in the community with Brownie troops and was a member of the Quilter’s Guild. Mrs. Jay had several hobbies, which included: sewing, quilting, gardening and traveling. She was very involved in her church, serving as a teacher for the Sunday school department, children’s department and training union. She was also a member of the Rebekah Sunday school class and the WMU. Mrs. Jay was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fitzgerald since 1940, but had attended church with her daughter and son-in-law for the last few years.

She is survived by her daughters: Alice (John) Weaver of Fitzgerald, Nancy Jay of Orlando, Florida and Peggy Jay of Athens; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild expected in January, 2015. Several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: David Goebler Jay, five sisters and five brothers.
