Obituary


Hyannis Port – Charles A. Powers Jr., 96, of Hyannis Port, passed away peacefully on October 22nd. He was born in Quincy, MA on January 18, 1918.
He is survived by his wife Virginia Leukhardt Powers; his son Robert Powers and wife Sandra of Barrington, RI; his son David Powers and wife Joanne of Hingham, MA; his son Richard Powers and wife MJ of Gloucester, MA; his stepson William Leukhardt and wife Terri of Danbury, CT; his stepson Edward (Ned) Leukhardt and wife Elise of Oslo, Norway and his stepdaughter Pauline (Polly) Leukhardt Fenner and husband David Fenner of Westford, MA. He is also survived by many, many grandchildren and great grandchildren, nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his first wife Elsa, his son John, his brother Rodney and his brother James.
A memorial service will be held at the Federated Church of Hyannis at a later date. Burial will be private. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Davis Funeral Home of Plymouth, MA.
Charlie grew up in Braintree, MA and lived in Randolph and Milton before settling in Hyannis Port in 1979. He was a veteran of World War II and remained active in the Army Reserve until honorably retired in 1978 as a Lt. Colonel. He was a former partner of the Charles A. Powers & Sons Insurance Agency of Boston and Randolph that he formed with his father and brother Rodney in 1949. He was a devoted and active member of both the First Congregational Church of Milton and the Federated Church of Hyannis.
He was a long time and devoted member of Rotary, where he served as President of the Randolph Rotary Club and Governor of District 7950. The Randolph Rotary Club established a Charles A. Powers Jr. Humanitarian Award in his honor. He was proud of the fact that he had over 60 years of perfect attendance. As a student at UMASS he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He was a long time member of the UMass Alumni Association where he served on the Board of Directors and has chaired his class reunion committee since 1980. In 1994 he and his first wife Elsa were honored by the Cape Cod Alumni Club by having their annual scholarship at the Cape Cod Community College named in their honor. He was very involved in the Cape Cod Chapter of the American Red Cross, a proud member of the Cape Cod Ski Club and 70+ Ski Club and an active member of the Hyannis Port Golf Club. He enjoyed bridge, golf, skiing and helping others.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the Federated Church of Hyannis, 320 Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601. Funeral services will be private, but a Memorial Service and a celebration of Charlie’s life will be held for family and friends at the Federated Church of Hyannis on Saturday, November 1 at 11 AM
