William A. Houghton, 85

William A. Houghton, age 85, of Norton passed away on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Brighton. He was the beloved longtime companion of Josephine Johnston, with whom he made his home.
Born in Hingham, MA on February 27, 1929, he was a loving son of the late William A. and Alice M. (Sammett) Houghton. He grew up in Hingham and was a 1946 graduate of Hingham High School.
A resident of Norton for the past 55 years, Mr. Houghton was a self-employed farmer and the proud owner of Houghton Farm; a landmark in Norton which he established in 1959.
Billy served on the Board of Directors for the Bristol County Farm Bureau, was a member of the Jersey Cattlemen’s Association, and was a supporter and former member of the 4-H Club in Hingham.
A man of charitable nature, Billy enjoyed donating to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital., amongst others. He will always be remembered for his strong work ethics and for the remarkable sense of humor he possessed.
In addition to his companion Josephine, he was the dear brother of John Houghton and his wife Evelyn of Norton, Barbara Powers of Hingham and the late Charles Houghton. He is also survived by his many special friends in the farming community, as well as many nieces and nephews.
His Funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 16th at 10:00 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church, 1 Power Street, Norton. Burial will be private.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, September 15th from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home, 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton.
