Obituary

John D. “J. D.” Lindsey, 89, of Tifton died Thursday, August 21, 2014, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 24, 2014, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals with Dr. Fred Evers officiating. Mr. Lindsey will be laid to rest at Leila United Methodist Church Cemetery in Omega. John Danforth Jr., Wayne Harper, Carnell Poole, Joey Lindsey, Ray Woods and Duane Lindsey will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be present and past members of the DAV Chapter 38, Ronald Harper, Lisa Lindsey, Lee Lindsey, members of Northside Baptist Church, Sandra Wood, Warren Knapp, Jack Evans and past employees of Dixie Oil Company. The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 23, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.

Mr. Lindsey was born on March 10, 1925 in Omega and was the son of Shelton G. Lindsey and Nancy Baker Lindsey, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Lee Danforth Lindsey, who died in 2012; two brothers, Bobby B. Lindsey and James Jack Lindsey; and four sisters, Martha Lindsey Mathis, Lillian Lindsey Purvis, Lenora Lindsey Zitzelman and Hazel Lindsey Sims. He was retired from Dixie Oil Company and was a veteran of the United States Marines and was a Purple Heart recipient in the Battle of Okinawa in World War II and was a corporal in the U. S. Marines 6th Division. He was the commander of Local Disabled American Veterans Chapter 38 for over 40 years. He was instrumental in the Local Chapter of the DAV providing free van service for all veterans to and from the VA Hospital in Dublin.

Mr. Lindsey is survived by one son, John H. Lindsey of Tifton; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Emma Lindsey Skinner and husband Thomas of Sparks; three grandchildren, Floyd Thomas Skinner and wife, Nathalie of Lawrenceville, Julie Skinner of Valdosta and John Patrick Lindsey of Tifton; one great-granddaughter, Bernardita Lee Skinner of Lawrenceville; one brother-in-law, J. B. Woods of Tifton; and two sisters-in-law, Jewell Harper and Jo Edith Lindsey, both of Tifton.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Mr. Lindsey’s care-givers, Carnell Poole, Rick Shoulders, Dr. Brent Savelli and Nurse Vicky.
