Edward W. Mowry, age 63, of Norton passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro.
He was the beloved husband of Maryjane E. (Franco) Mowry with whom he recently celebrated 39 years of marriage on August 2, 2014.
Born in Central Falls, RI on July 29, 1951, he was a son of the late Clarence P., Sr. and Henrietta (Davis) Mowry. He grew up in Cumberland and was a graduate of Cumberland High School.
Following graduation, Ed proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. After serving two years of active duty, he was honorably discharged with the rank of SP4’
For over 40 years, Mr. Mowry had been employed as a Commercial Drivers License Instructor and Director at Nationwide Diesel Technology in Smithfield, RI, and also while the company operated under the name of Nationwide Tractor Trailer Training School.
In 1976, Ed became a Call Firefighter for the Town of Norton. He rose to the present rank of Captain at Station 2, served as the current department driving instructor and was a member of the MA Call Volunteer Firefighters Association.
In December of 2006, Mr. Mowry became highly recognized for his roll in interrupting what could have been a possible act of terrorism in the State of Rhode Island.
Ed was a 31 year member of the Norton American Legion Post 222. His interests included hunting, fishing, engaging in projects around the home, and watching old westerns. He loved spending time with family and friends, especially his best friend “Bailey”
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his devoted daughter Rebecca L. Mowry of Taunton. He was the brother of Kathy Laliberte of RI, Jackie Thomas of FL, Clarence P. Mowry, Jr. of RI, Wendy Hampson of Norton, Maureen Mowry of RI, Cindy Noonan of RI, and Russell Mowry of RI. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
His funeral service, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Monday, August 11th at 10:00 A.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home, 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton. Burial with military honors will follow at the Timothy Plain Cemetery in Norton.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, August 10th from 4:00-7:00 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home.
