David A. Collingwood, age 72, a lifelong resident of Mansfield passed away peacefully on Monday, July 14, 2014 at the VA Medical Center in Brockton, MA.
Born in Utica, New York on February 21, 1942, he was a loving son of Nina (Prohodsky) Collingwood of Mansfield and the late Frederick P. Collingwood, Jr.
David grew up in Mansfield and was a 1960 graduate of Mansfield High School where he was a standout athlete lettering in basketball, football and track.
He attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst and then proudly served his Country in The Vietnam War from 1961-1966 as a member of the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged from duty with the rank of ETR3; he remained a patriot and a member of the Mansfield VFW.
A widely respected paint contractor, David took great pride in his work. He was called on for projects throughout Massachusetts.
An avid angler and hiker he experienced New England’s natural beauty with his children. He most enjoyed gardening and sent all visitors home with fresh vegetables. His most beloved visitors and gardening assistants were his grandchildren.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his proud and loving children; Deborah M. Collingwood of Seekonk, Samuel D. Collingwood and his wife Beth of Virginia, and Derith Collingwood of Virginia. He was the dear friend and brother of Frederick A. Collingwood and his wife Anne of California, William A. Collingwood of California, Phillip A. Collingwood and his wife Barbara of Kansas, and the late Derith E. Collingwood. He was the devoted nephew of Anna Prohodsky and Helen Prohodsky both of Mansfield and Michael Prohodsky of Kansas. David is also survived by his cherished grandchildren Samuel F. Collingwood and Devan E. Collingwood as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend graveside services with military honors on Tuesday, August 5th at 10:00 A.M. at the North Purchase Cemetery, 825 North Main St. (Route 152) Attleboro.
