Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Smith, 78, wife of Alan Smith of Wenham, MA, formerly of Fairfield, CT, passed away peacefully in the company of her family on November 30, 2013. Betty grew up in Rochester, NY where she graduated from Our Lady of Mercy High School and then St. Mary’s Hospital Nursing School with a degree in nursing. Betty was a surgical nurse, a pediatric nurse and then became a public health nurse in New York where she met Alan. Betty and Alan were married for 52 years, making their home in Fairfield, CT.
Betty was extremely dedicated to her family and to helping others. She was an active volunteer with children at schools and church and also developed and led interactive activity sessions with senior citizens. Betty was well known for her artistic creativity which was a part of everything that she did. She loved daily walks along Fairfield and Southport, CT beaches and going to the library and music concerts. Betty was always extending gentle kindness to others.
Betty’s deepest love was for her husband Alan and their children; Linda Smith of Wenham, MA, Paul Smith and his wife Valerie of Lee, NH and Monica Pessina and her husband Craig of West Newbury, MA as well as four grandchildren, Audrey and Shelby Smith and Emily and William Pessina.
