Obituary

Mary A. (Slemp) Smith, a 47 year resident of Melrose, entered into eternal life on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Genesis Westford House in Westford following a lengthy illness. She was 82 years old.

Mary was born in Jacksonville, Florida on December 10, 1930, daughter of the late Howard Slemp and Thelma (Peregoy) Slemp. She grew up in Jacksonville, Florida and Lakeland, Florida where she was educated and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, Florida. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Florida State University in 1952 and her Masters Degree in Education from Boston University in 1975. Mary was an elementary school teacher in Jacksonville, Florida before moving to Melrose where she taught at The Horace Mann School in Melrose for over 20 years. Mary enjoyed gardening, puzzles, dining out, traveling by train, feeding the birds and most of all spending quality time with her family.

Mary is the beloved wife of 60 years to Horace M. Smith. She is the devoted mother of Ellen Williford and her husband Tony of Fulshear, Texas, Jeffrey Smith and his wife Susan of Atkinson, New Hampshire and Bradford Smith and his wife Eileen of Westford. She is the loving Grammy to Rebecca Smith, Alexander Smith, Leah Rogers and her husband Joe, Katie Smith, Michael Smith and his wife Kayleigh, Eric Smith and her great-grandson, Brenden Smith. She is the beloved sister of Howard Slemp Jr. of Annapolis, Maryland. The family also acknowledges her devoted neighbors and friends from Vinton St. and Brunswick Park of Melrose.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Mary's visiting hours on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 from 5 to 7 P.M. followed by her Funeral Service at 7 P.M. in The Carr Funeral Home, 1159 Main St. Melrose. Interment will be at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg, Virginia.
