Obituary

Brother Bernard Philpott, C.F.X., 81, a member of the Congregation of the Brothers of Saint Francis Xavier for sixty-three years, died Thursday evening, October 31, 2013 at Maristhill Nursing & Rehab. in Waltham.

Born in Brighton, UK on June 26, 1932, he was the son of the late William and Dorothy Philpott. He entered the Xaverian Brothers on September 11, 1950 in Deeping St. James, UK and was given the religious name Brother Sylvester.

Over the course of his apostolate, he furthered his education with degrees from St. Mary’s College (London University), Corpus Christi College in London, and Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

Brother Bernard taught in several assignments at Xaverian College, Manchester, UK, and also at Mayfield College, Clapham College, and Corpus Christi College, all in the UK, and also at Sacred Heart Juniorate and Ryken High School in Leonardtown, MD. He served as director of both the Xaverian Brothers Juniorate in Manchester, UK and Bradley House, Mayfield, UK.

Within the congregation, he served as Vicar General of the Xaverian Brothers from 1983-1989 and as Assistant to the Superior General from 1989-1995.

He had been a member of the community at Xaverian House, Danvers since 2002.

In addition to his brothers in religion, he is survived by a sister, Dorothy Hotz of Toronto, Canada, a brother, Philip Philpott of Birkenhead, UK, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Margaret and Frances.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013 at 3PM in the Chapel of St. John’s Preparatory School (Admin. Bldg.), 72 Spring St., Danvers. Burial will follow in Xaverian Brothers Cemetery, Danvers. Visitation will precede the service beginning at 2PM. Relatives and friends are invited. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Xaverian Brothers Retirement Fund, 4409 Frederick Ave., Baltimore, MD 21229.
