Palmerio, Elvira Castano (July 23, 1929), long time resident of Needham, Saturday, April 9, 2016 (86).
Loving daughter of the late Giovanni (John) and Josephine (Caruso) Castano. Dearest wife of the late Dr. Carlo Palmerio of Chieti, Italy. Beloved mother of Marina Palmerio and husband, Bradley Schuyler of Florence, Italy and Amsterdam, Netherlands. Cherished sister of Marie Lothrop and devoted Aunt of Joanne Lothrop, John Lothrop, Kristen Kreutzer, Annabella Lothrop and Philip Kreutzer, of San Leandro, CA.
A graduate of Emerson College, a Cardinal Spellman Scholar, a post grad student of Pius XII Institute and a student of Opera in Florence, Italy. Elvira was passionate about the arts, international affairs and was the recipient of numerous awards. Her love of Italy and her beloved Florence, were a constant source of inspiration throughout her life.
Elvira's biography included teaching speech and dramatic art at Emmanuel College; Curator for Castano Art Gallery, Newbury St. Boston; vatican translator; interpreter for the italian art world. Appointed secretary to the world affairs council, Boston, she also held various positions including Director of the Boston University Women’s Council; Sec. World Affairs Council; Needham Historical Society and the Gov.’s Commission on Women’s Issues. Elvira was a most enthusiastic member of the Boston Browing Society, Fogg Art Museum at Harvard, Friends of Needham Library, Needham Art Association, Women in Arts, Wellesley Historical Society, National Italian American Foundation, World Boston and several others.
Funeral service is at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 1305 Highland Ave, Needham on Saturday, April 23rd at 11am. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Burial following at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Needham.
