Theresa V. Shinney
3/21/2016

Theresa Veronica Shinney, age 95, slipped away from us peacefully and quietly at The Arnold House in Stoneham, on March 21, 2016. Theresa was born on January 18, 1921 to Charles and Grace Doherty in Charlestown and was extremely proud to be called a 'Townie'. She married William “Bill” Shinney, the love of her life, on February 16, 1946. Bill preceded her in death on January 9, 1996. They were married for 49 years and lived in Winchester for most of their married life. She is survived by her two daughters: Patricia (Eric) Schaefer of Cotuit, MA and Susan (David) Little of Halifax, Nova Scotia, as well as 6 grandchildren and 5 great- grandchildren. As well as her husband, she was preceded in death by her son William Shinney, Jr., brothers Hugh and John Doherty and sister, Katherine Justice. Theresa will always be remembered for her love of life and her laughter. She will be greatly missed by all of us who knew and loved her. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Arnold House in Stoneham who cared so lovingly for her in her last few years. Visitation will be at the Costello Funeral Home in Winchester on Thursday, March 24 from 10-11:30 immediately followed by a graveside service at the Wildwood Cemetery in Winchester. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Charlestown Boys and Girls Club, 15 Green St. Charlestown, MA 02129.

Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep by Mary Elizabeth Frye
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand and my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
