Obituary

Mr. Alexander C. Demeter, a resident of Medford for more than 64 years and beloved husband of Suzanne (Ballou) passed away at the Chelsea Soldiers Home in Chelsea on Saturday morning, March 5, 2016. He was 92 years old.

Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, Alex was the beloved son of the late Spiridon Constantine Demeter and Agnes (Pappaylion) Demeter. Alex was a graduate of Brookline High School, and attended Boston University. Mr. Demeter was a WWII Army Veteran, entering the military at Boston and receiving his honorable discharge. While serving in the Army, Mr. Demeter worked in the  Medical Corps and was a Rifle Marksman. He was awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, the American Theater Campaign Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon for his exemplary service. In civilian life, Alex was the sole proprietor of the Demeter Insurance Agency and had also worked as the Treasurer for the Soldiers Home in Chelsea. He was a life member of both the Shriners Masons. He also served on Plan E in Medford.  In his spare time, Alex enjoyed playing golf. Alex had a great love of Cape Cod, enjoying his summers there growing up, where he fostered a life long love of swimming.

Besides his beloved wife, Suzanne, he is survived by his loving son and daughter-in-law; Dean R. and Janine M. Demeter and his daughter, Faith Demeter Longobucco of Torrington, Connecticut, his sisters Darcy Wheaton of Brighton and Constance Prescott of Wellesley. He was the devoted grandfather of granddaughter Kerry Lynne Longobucco of Apalachin, New York and survived by many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Elizabeth Christos and Nicolette White and father-in-law of the late Domenic Longobucco.

His funeral service will be celebrated in the Beals-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Avenue, Medford on Wednesday, March 9, 2016, at 10:30 AM. Relatives and friends are most welcome to attend. Visitation will be held in the funeral home, prior to the service from 9 to 10:30 AM. Interment will be held in Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.
