Obituary

Smithy, Ruth B. (Sullivan) passed away on January 28, 2016. Ruth was born on June 24, 1922 in Derry, New Hampshire, daughter of Joseph and Frances Sullivan. She was pre-deceased by her beloved husband of sixty seven years, George B. Smithy, MD. She leaves behind her three devoted sons and daughter in laws, George and Cynthia of Wellesley Massachusetts, William and Andrea of Poquott, New York and Thomas and Dale of Waukesha, Wisconsin. She was the proud grandmother of James, Elizabeth, Peter, Gretchen, Claire, Kristina and Sarah.

Ruth graduated from Pinkerton Academy and earned her R.N degree from the Elliot Hospital School of Nursing in Manchester, New Hampshire. She was an Ensign in the United States Navy during WW II, stationed at the Charlestown Naval Yard. She met a young navel surgeon, George, who soon became her husband.

Before beginning her family, Ruth was a nurse at the Cornell New York Hospital in New York City and then returned to Boston, where she worked at the Massachusetts General Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Brookline and an active participant in the St Elizabeth’s Hospital Auxiliary, the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association.

Funeral arrangements by the Robert J. Lawler and Crosby Funeral Home, 1803 Centre St. West Roxbury. Visitation hours will be in the funeral home on Thursday, February 4th, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in The Holy Name Church in West Roxbury on Friday February 5, at 10:00 am, followed by burial at St Joseph’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pinkerton Academy, Derry, New Hampshire, Joslin Diabetes Center, or the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
