Susan Margaret Dickerson née Caldwell of Ventura passed away at home on January 26th in the early morning. Born May 31st, 1942 in King City, California, Susan grew up with her twin brother Stephen in Lockwood Valley on their parents’ turkey farm. There she later met her husband John and they moved to Ventura, where they raised their three children and Susan worked as an LVN until her retirement.
The Dickerson house was always filled with animals—an animal lover and a proud “crazy cat lady,” Susan adopted every stray that came to the door. She was also a woman of faith, and she found community and kinship as an active member of the Orchard Community Church and as a former deacon of the Presbyterian Church.
Susan was very compassionate and strong-willed, and she had a sharp tongue and a soft heart. To know her was to love her, and she will be sorely missed.
Susan is preceded in death by her brother Stephen Caldwell, her sister-in-law and dear friend Cathy Caldwell, and her son Steve Dickerson. She is survived by her husband of 51 years John, her daughters and sons-in-law Stephanie and Mark Karch of Camarillo and Mary and Mike Park of Santa Barbara, her grandchildren Sarah (17), Justin (17), Jessica (22), and Lauren (26), and her two great-grandchildren Devin (1) and Jason (3).
In memory of Susan’s life, the family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the American Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
