Obituary

NATICK: William J. Curran, age 74, a longtime Natick resident and area carpenter, died early Thursday morning, January 21, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. He and Virginia M. (Owens) Curran had marked their 50 wonderful years of married life at a large and memorable party last year.

Born in Newton, he was the son of the late Ernest H. and Marion (Hickey) Curran. Bill was raised and educated in Wellesley and joined the United States Marine Corps shortly after graduating from Wellesley High School. He served in the Marine Corps for six years, the last two of which were spent at Cherry Point where Cpl. Curran and his bride Ginny started their family.

When Bill returned from the service, he and Ginny purchased a home in Natick that had been built by Bill and his Dad. Billy continued working in carpentry and construction with his father and eventually worked on his own, establishing William J Curran, Contractor and Builder, and as such was successfully employed in Wellesley and the surrounding towns for more than forty years. Over the years Bill worked with many young up and coming carpenters and shared his knowledge of the trade. Some of these young men became like family to Bill and felt that bond to the present day.

Bill had enjoyed vacationing in York, Maine, all of his life and was happy to introduce his own family to the joys of ocean side living. This is where he and his family would spend their summers. He shared his excitement for boating and fishing, snowmobiling, skiing, and scuba diving, attained both a Sea Captain’s license and Pilot’s license, and perhaps most challenging of all his pastimes – he played golf. Having worked in a greenhouse while in his teens, Bill never lost his love for gardening. He was meticulous in keeping his homes and yard in top shape.

A longtime member of the Natick Lodge of Elks #1425, Bill was possessed of an extraordinary sense of humor, a penchant for practical jokes, and a heart big enough to fill his wife’s, children’s and grandchildren’s, lives with love and still have more to give to the countless souls he touched along the road.

He is survived by Ginny; their three daughters, Peggy Curran-Smith of Sherborn, Jennifer Curran Pelletier and her husband Gary of Millis, and Wendy Curran-Elassy and her partner Edward Bracken of Natick; his much loved grandchildren, Alexandra Smith, Hannah Elassy, Michael Elassy, Curran Pelletier, and Maggie Pelletier; his sister, Nancy Schmidt and her husband John of Sterling, MA, and their son, Jeffrey; his sister-in-law, Peggy Joyce and her husband Marty of York, ME, and their children Cynthia and Bryan; his step-siblings, Alan Thompson, Cindy Cimo, Kathy Roderick, and Lisa Johnston; and many nieces, nephews, and their families.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Patrick’s Church, 44 East Central Street, Natick, on Friday, January 29th at 11:00 AM. Burial with military honors will follow at Glenwood Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be in the John Everett & Sons Funeral Home, 4 Park Street at Natick Common, on Thursday January 28th, 4 – 8PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill’s memory to the Semper Fi Fund, 825 College Blvd, Suite 102, Oceanside, CA 92057.
