New Bedford - Maria G. Sousa 97, passed away on Tuesday January 12, 2016 surrounded by her loving family. She was the widow of the late Manuel Sousa and the daughter of the late Maria da Conceicao (Cabral) and Jacinto Moniz. Born in St. Michael, Azores, Mrs. Sousa moved to this country many years ago and was an assembler for Cornell Dubilier until her retirement.
Her surviving family includes 6 children: Joao Sousa of South Dartmouth, Jose Sousa of New Bedford, Maria Marques of South Dartmouth, Jorge Sousa of New Bedford, Clarice Mello of Indiana and Carlos Sousa of New Bedford; 3 siblings: Chico Moniz of St. Michael Azores, Maria dos Anjos of Terceira Azores, and Maria da Trindade also of St. Michael Azores; as well as several nieces and nephews, 18 Grandchildren, 41 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great Great Grandchildren. Mrs. Sousa was predeceased by her son Manuel Sousa and her siblings Guilhermina, Jose, and Manuel Moniz.
Her funeral will be on Friday beginning in the funeral home at 9:30 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10:30 A.M. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Thursday evening from 5 – 8 P.M. Thank you to the staff at Brandon Woods of Dartmouth and to Beacon Hospice.
