Joseph G. Smith, Sr. of Woburn passed away peacefully Monday, January 11, 2016 after a lingering heart condition. He was 78 years of age. Joe, as he was affectionately known to his family and friends, was the beloved husband of Maryann (Polito) and together they shared 57 years of marriage. Born in Winchester he was the son of the late James N. and Mary (Gerrior) Smith.


Joe was raised and educated in Winchester. He attended St. Mary Parochial School and was a graduate of Winchester High School with the class of 1954. Following high school Joe enlisted in Marine Corps and honorably served his country during the Vietnam War and was discharged in June of 1962. Joe was a proud Veteran and extremely proud to have served his country. When Joe returned home he attended Northeastern University and Newman Prep. He worked for many years as a talented auto mechanic and for a number of years he owned and operated the Winn Street Mobil Station in the 70's where he employed his sons and many of the neighborhood kids.


Joe loved the outdoors and enjoyed golfing, camping, spending many weekends in New Hampshire and Maine. He was also an avid fan of all the Boston sports teams.


Joe was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served as Grand Knight in both the Woburn Council #77 and Burlington Council #4978. He was also a past president of the Yankee Twirler Square Dance Club. However, Joe's greatest joy in life was his children and grandchildren, he was so proud of all of them. He will be sadly missed.


In addition to his beloved wife Maryann, He is survived by his children; Joseph G. Smith Jr. and his wife Karen of Woburn, Dr. Michael J. Smith of Woburn, Carolyn Smith Gerrior of Chelmsford, Daniel J. Smith and his wife Kim of Frederick, MD. He was the loving grandfather of Joseph, Brian and Robert Smith, Vada, Lydia and Chloe Sabbatelli. Brother of Willa Cummings and husband Jim of Jay, OK, the late George and James Smith. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.


Funeral from the McLaughlin - Dello Russo Funeral Home, 60 Pleasant St., WOBURN, Friday, January 15th, at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Barbara Church, 138 Cambridge Rd., Woburn, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Thursday from 4 thru 8 p.m. Services will conclude with military honors and burial at Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.
