New Bedford - Maria DeMelo passed away on Tuesday January 5, 2016 surrounded by her children. She was the widow of Altino DeMelo and the daughter of the late Sofia deJesus Vieira and Janim August Amaral. Born in Povoacao, Azores, Mrs. DeMelo moved to this country in 1974 and was a housewife in her own home.
Her surviving family includes daughters: Alda Raposo and her husband Joe of New Bedford; Ilda Lake and her husband Ray of Swansea; Susana Rebello and her husband Armand of Fall River; sons: Altino Melo and his wife Ramona of Acushnet; John Melo and his wife Olivia of New Bedford; a brother, Janim Amaral of New Bedford; as well as several nieces and nephews, 10 Grandchildren, and 9 Great Grandchildren. Mrs. DeMelo was predeceased by her daughter Maria Nazareth Melo.
Her funeral will be on Friday beginning in the funeral home at 8:00 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 9:00 A.M. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Thursday evening from 5 – 8 P.M. Arrangements placed in the care of Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. in New Bedford, MA.
