Obituary

Robert T. “Butch” Sweeney, age 77, of Brockton, died Sunday, November 22, 2015 at Signature Healthcare-Brockton Hospital. He was the devoted husband for 52 years of Angela (Scalco) Sweeney. Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Wilfred J. and Emily M. (Thornton) Sweeney. Butch was raised and educated in East Boston, and had been a resident of Brockton for the past 51 years. During Vietnam, he served in the Army as an electronics technician. For over 30 years he was employed as a Fire, Security, and Sprinkler Technician for Simplex, and Automatic Alarm-Hart Securities. He enjoyed spending time working with electronics and was an avid model railroader.
In addition to his wife Angela, Butch is survived by four children, Robert Sweeney of Las Vegas, Rita Nesbitt and her husband Vernon of Brockton, Cynthia Pike of Taunton and Mark Sweeney and his wife Sabine of Berkley; grandson Brian S. Handrahan and his wife Dani; step granddaughter Kayla Pike; great grandchildren Landyn and Talyn; former daughter in law Debra Sweeney and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of Jacqueline Van Norman and Barbara Bowers both of San Diego, CA and the late Wilfred “Reggie” Sweeney.
Visiting Hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton, Sunday 2-5pm. The funeral procession will gather at the funeral home Monday at 9am for a funeral Mass in St. Edith Stein Parish at 10am. Burial in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. In lieu of flowers, donations in Butch’s name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 480 Pleasant St, Watertown, MA 02472 or American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St, Framingham, MA 01701.
