MAHEGAN, Maureen Elizabeth, of Winthrop, passed away peacefully on November 17th. The daughter of the late Albert and Rose (Hennessy) Mahegan, she was born on October 8, 1958 and was a lifelong Winthrop resident. Maureen is survived by her siblings, Jule Sales of Jacksonville, FL, Albert Mahegan of Westwood, Kerry Melanson of Burlington, Susan DeFelice of Swampscott, Linda Cramer of Winthrop, Robert Mahegan of Marblehead, Donald Mahegan of Danvers, Siobhan Dalton of Amherst, NH, and two generations of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother David Mahegan. Maureen actively participated in Special Olympics, originally in gymnastics and later in track and field. Her mother Rose pioneered the way for her in the early 1960’s and was her tireless supporter over the decades. Maureen also enjoyed dances, bowling and many other activities offered through Winthrop Advocacy Resources Community (WINARC), where her mother was a charter member. The Driscoll-Mahegan track meet continues today as a special annual WINARC event. For over 20 years Maureen worked at the Center House in Boston. In addition to her athletic endeavors, Maureen was especially proud of her Irish heritage. She loved music, loved to dance, but most of all, she loved her family. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the Funeral Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church in Winthrop at 10:00am on Friday, December 4th. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to WINARC, c/o Nancy Tufo, 3 Seal Harbor Rd., #647, Winthrop, MA 02152. Burial will follow in Winthrop Cemetery.
