Obituary

Mary Antonia Griego past away at the age of 100 (and six months) on Tuesday, November 17, 2015.

Mary was born in Jerez Zacatecas, Mexico on May 10, 1915. Mary and her family came to the United States during the Mexican Revolution. Mary grew up in Camarillo and was the daughter of Julia T. Sotello, one of the first donas when Camarillo became a city. Mary was close friends with Pancho, Carmen, and Adolfo Camarillo.

Mary enjoyed politics. She worked tirelessly on multiple democratic campaigns, including those for John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton. She was appointed as a state delegate by Governor Edmond G. Brown and was an early supporter of Cesar Chavez and his struggles to eventually help create the United Farmworkers of America.

Mary was an entrepreneur, selling Vivian Woodward products for many years.

Mary also was a devout Roman Catholic, faithfully attending church each week until she was no longer capable and a member of the Secular Franciscan Order. She was also a member of the Guadalupanas Society.

Mary was loved by her family, including her late husband, Peter Boniface Griego Jr. She was the matriarch of the entire family. Mary is survived by her children, Christine Kennedy, Nicholas Griego, Elizabeth Griego, and Paulette Hendren, her grandchildren, Cathy Atkins, Charles Wright, Jim and Annette (wife) Graue, John and Sheena (wife) Kennedy, and Beth Kennedy, along with her eight great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Paula Griggs.

Family and friends are invited to visiting hours 5-8pm Friday evening November 27, 2015 in the JOSEPH P. REARDON FUNERAL HOME, 757 E. Main Street Ventura, with a Most Holy Rosary to be recited at 6:30pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30am Saturday November 28, 2015 Interment will immediately follow in Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura.
