Obituary

Mrs. Erika G. (Wendt) Hemp, a resident of North Andover, formerly of Andover and beloved wife of the late Herbert K. Hemp, passed away at the Prescott House Nursing Center in North Andover on Friday, November 13, 2015. She was 91 years old.
Born in Danzig on February 6, 1924, she was the beloved daughter of the late Friedrich and Gertrude (Schlichte) Wendt. Mrs. Hemp married her husband at the end of World War II. They later escaped across the Iron Curtain when they left Communist East Germany for democratic West Germany. In the late 1950s, they embarked on another huge change when they emigrated to the United States. Herbert and Erika Hemp became proud American citizens, often reminiscing about the adventurous lives they had led before they settled here to live peaceful lives. Mrs. Hemp was a Registered Nurse and had been employed by the Lawrence General Hospital for more than 35 years. She later worked as a nurse at the nun's home at the Presentation of Mary Academy in Methuen. She enjoyed traveling, cooking and going to the symphony. Erika very much loved to listen to classical music; every summer, she and her husband would travel to Tanglewood to enjoy the Boston Symphony in their summer home. One of her favorite daily activities was to make a traditional afternoon tea. Above all, she was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her loving daughters; Regina and her husband Phil Cole of Gloucester and Dagmar Hemp of Malden; daughter-in-law; Charlene Hemp of Methuen, grandchildren; Douglas, Katrina, Eliza, Michaela and Erika and great-grandchildren; Kerrigan and Madeline. She was also the loving mother of the late Uwe Hemp, sister of the late Hildegard Wendt and aunt of Rebecca Wendt.
Her Funeral Service will be celebrated in the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main Street, Andover on Friday, November 20, 2015, at 1 PM. Relatives and friends are most welcome to attend. Interment will be held in the West Parish Garden Cemetery in Andover. For additional information, please visit, www.burkemagliozzi.com.
