John D. Jenkins age 89 of Canton passed away November 11th surrounded by his loving family. Born in Hyde Park, he was raised in Canton, graduated from Canton High class of 1944 where he was class president and captain of the football team. John was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard and worked as a foreman for the Plymouth Rubber Company in Canton. He also worked as a Janitor for St. James Church in Stoughton, a school crossing guard for the Town of Canton and drove a bus for the Grow Workshop in Stoughton. John was also a former member of the K of C Council 2095 in Canton, a member and former president of the Canton Senior Men’s Club, and was past president of SNARC. John loved to sing and after he was discharged from the Coast Guard he went to voice training school in Boston. Through the years he sang with the St. John the Evangelist Church Choir, several local Minstrel Shows and most recently the Canton and Norwood Senior Groups. He was an avid sports fan and historian and wrote a sports history book and an autobiography about his life growing up in Hyde park and Canton. Beloved husband of the late Anna (Walker). Father of Mary Carr and her husband John of Canton, Theresa Coffey and her husband Gary of FL, William P. and his wife Ann of Canton, Eileen Jenkins of Canton, and the late John D., Jr. and Frederick J. Loving son of the late George and Annette (Sullivan) Jenkins. Brother of Thomas Jenkins of Canton, and the late George, Kenneth, Edward, Russell, Francis and Bernard Jenkins. Grandfather of Daniel Carr, Elizabeth O’Sullivan, Lauren Carr, Theresa Hughes, Ann Marie Knight, Colleen Jenkins, Matthew Jenkins, Cheryl Coffey and Brittany Coffey Reuwer. Great grandfather of Kaitlyn O’Sullivan, Braden Carr, Sean Carr, Jacob Knight, and Samson & Gideon Reuwer. Also many nieces and nephews and a special friend Carol Hagen Romanelli of Stoughton. Visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home 455 Washington St. Canton Sunday 3-7 pm. Funeral Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church Canton Monday morning at 10:30. Burial Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton. Veteran United States Coast Guard. Donations may be made in his memory to the Canton Veteran’s Service Department 801 Washington St. Canton, MA 02021.
