John A. Lopes, 74, of New Bedford passed away at home on October 6, 2015 after a long illness. He was the son of the late Albert Lopes and Almedina (Helen) Lopes.
Mr. Lopes was employed by the city of New Bedford until his retirement and continued to work as a limo driver for several years. He served in the military for 27 years. He was in the U.S. Marines and served in Vietnam and retired from the Army Reserves.
Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Marie (Gilmete) Lopes; 2 sons, Kevin A. Lopes and his wife Jessica of New Bedford and Mark A. Lopes and his wife Cheyenne of Fontana, CA; 2 daughters, Renee Lopes-Ledbetter and Amanda Moniz and her fiancé Markus Rodriquez, all of New Bedford; 2 brothers, Albert "Rocky" Lopes of New Bedford and Clifton Lopes and his wife Carolyn of Mattapoisett; 2 sisters, Faith Lopes of Marion and Rosalyn Lacerda of Falmouth; 12 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
He was the father of the late Justin Moniz and the brother to the late Medina "Molly" Gilbert and Robert Lopes.
His Funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 13th at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Church at 9 AM. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Monday, October 12th from 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations to the family would be appreciated.
