WEST SPRINGFIELD – Timothy M. Dowd, 73, a longtime resident of West Springfield and a former resident of Cleveland Street in the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Saturday, October 3, 2015. He passed into Eternal Life at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Springfield on January 9, 1942, a beloved son of the late Thomas J. and Hanna M. (Dowd) Dowd, both of Castlemaine, County Kerry, Ireland. Tim was raised in Springfield, graduated from the former Our Lady of Hope Elementary School and, in 1961, graduated from Cathedral High School. He lived in Springfield for many years before moving to West Springfield in 1968. In 1964, Tim graduated from the former New England Institute of Anatomy, Sanitary Science, Embalming and Funeral Directing in Boston. He then received his Embalming and Funeral Directing License from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and was employed for many years at area funeral homes. He later was employed for over 25 years as a Lottery Representative for the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission and retired in 2010. Tim was well-known in the Springfield area and following his retirement from the lottery, he became a Funeral Associate at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Funeral Chapels in Springfield and Chicopee. Tim was active in local, state and government politics. During his leisure time, he enjoyed watching movies and football and especially enjoyed his yearly trips to Maine with his wife, Angela. Most of all, he truly loved his family and his many friends and was always ready to assist anyone in need. He was a longtime communicant of the former Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield and currently a communicant of Saint Thomas the Apostle Church in West Springfield. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Angela M. (Langone) Dowd. They were married on May 1, 1965 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 50 years of happiness together. He also leaves his two loving children, Joseph M. Dowd of West Springfield and Kara E. Guimond and her husband, Scott, of Ware; his two loving brothers, John “Yaco” Dowd of Springfield and James “Zeke” Dowd and his wife, Susan, of Wilbraham; his two loving sisters-in-law, Nancy Dowd of South Yarmouth and Mary Cronin Dowd of West Springfield; his three dear sisters-in-law of the Langone family, Marianne Karam and her husband, Peter, of Agawam, Barbara Cummings and her husband, Ned, of South Carolina and Christine O’Connor and her husband, Edward, of Springfield; his dear brother-in-law of the Langone family, James Langone and his wife, Chiqui, of Vero Beach, FL; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Dowd and Langone families. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his two loving brothers, Thomas Dowd and Lawrence Dowd; and his loving sister-in-law, Elizabeth Dowd. His funeral will be held on Thursday morning, October 8, 2015 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 9 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Saint Thomas the Apostle Church, 47 Pine Street, West Springfield, MA 01089. His burial will be private at the convenience of his family. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Shriners Hospital for Children, (please specify Springfield), 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
