Obituary

SUDBURY: Peter K. Lavery, age 56, died peacefully at his Sudbury family home on Friday afternoon, September 25, 2015. He was the devoted son of Anne Burns Lavery of Sudbury and the late Stanley Joseph Lavery.

Born in Mars Hill, Maine, he spent several memorable years of his youth in Anaheim, CA, prior to his family settling in Holliston. Peter was a 1976 graduate of Holliston High School, and continued his education at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Predisposed to his gifts as a finish carpenter, he opted to forego the sea and pursue the career that most complimented his talents. He was very creative; he could take a piece of copper wire and turn it into a keepsake or carve wooden figures and ships that are a joy to look at. Peter had an exquisite sense of spatial relationships which made his work all the more beautiful.

Peter had a wonderful sense of self and basked in nature in any of its forms. Whether vacationing with family on the Maine coast or camping deep in the woods, he was at home. His sense of adventure led him to live in many towns and cities, and he was blessed with a craft that allowed him such mobility. Many years ago, he built a home for his parents on family owned farmland, incorporating the original structure on the property, his grandparents’ one time residence. Peter had a great sense of history and an eye for detail which served him well.

His father died in 2003 and Peter was home to help care for him for the duration of the illness. Peter himself became ill in the fall of 2011. He was always close to his mother, who encouraged his creativity. Peter was cared for by his mother, sisters, and the latest in his long history of rescued dogs, Zoom.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his sisters, Susan Lavery-Buck and her husband Thomas of Wrentham, and Elizabeth Lavery of Sudbury; and his nieces, Karlie Buck and Natalie Buck.

A private memorial gathering is planned by Peter’s Family. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be made to Buddy Dog Humane Society, 151 Boston Post Road, Sudbury, MA 01776.
