John J. “Jack” McGilvray, age 77 of Rockland, previously a 38 year Whitman resident, died at home August 26. Jack is survived by his wife of 46 years Jennifer J. (Holman) McGilvray and their son Christopher J. McGilvray of Brockton. He is also survived by his brothers Paul A. of Rockport and Edward F. and his wife Dianne, of Haverhill and nieces Kathy McGilvray and Laurie McGilvray. Jack was raised in Cambridge by his parents the late Francis J. and Margaret M. (Foley) McGilvray.
Following his graduation from Rindge Technical High School in 1955 at age 17, he entered the U. S. Air Force. He served most of his 4 year enlistment with the Strategic Air Command at Lincoln Air Force Base, Nebraska. Following his honorable discharge, Jack attended Boston College, Class of 1963. He attended graduate school at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Jack began a career in the investment business with Draper, Sears & Co. of Boston and subsequently was employed by Oil Statistics Co. of Babson Park, MA, publisher of energy investment newsletters. Jack eventually became owner of Oil Statistics Co., which he operated with his wife Jennifer, until 2003, when publication was ended. Founded in 1923 the company’s Oil/Energy Statistics Bulletin was believed to be North America’s oldest investment newsletter. Jack also worked for Scudder Investments and until the end of 2014, the Ballou Channing and New England Regional Districts of the Unitarian Universalist Association.
At Jack’s request, there will be no wake or funeral services. Following cremation, burial will be private in Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton, MA at the convenience of the family. Expressions of sympathy may be at Jack’s suggestion, to benefit the Brockton TILL residence, where his beloved son Christopher resides.
