NEWTON: Maralynn L. (Mayer) Johnson, 76, died on Saturday, August 22, 2015 surrounded by her loving family at Massachusetts General Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Newton on November 26, 1938 the daughter of the late Leon H. Mayer and Harriet Martha (King) Mayer.
Maralynn is survived by her beloved husband of 51 years, Robert L. “Bob” Johnson of Newton and Bridgton, ME. Devoted mother of Eric Lawrence Johnson of Clinton and Kristen Marie McHugh and her husband Bill McHugh of Medway. Cherished grandmother of Jessica and Jaime Johnson, Kaitlyn, William, Timothy and John McHugh, and Ashley and Courtney Johnson. She was the mother of the late Steven A. Johnson and sister of the late Eleanor Bassett, Phyllis McGlone, Jean Scheibel Biancucci Baker, Edna Geary, Martha Kennedy and Elaine Mayer. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and many special friends.
Maralynn has been a lifelong resident of Newton and recently moved to Bridgton, ME where she and her family have summered for many years. She was a graduate of Newton North High School and received her BA in Education from Framingham State College and her Masters in Education from Lesley College. She had a long and distinguished career as a Special Education Teacher for grades K – 6 in the Natick, Newton and Waltham school systems for over 30 years. She still maintained her private tutoring practice up until her recent illness of several months. She loved to spend time with her family especially her grandchildren at their home in Bridgton, ME creating many happy memories with them. She especially loved playing cards, adventures on the lake, reading and writing. She treasured her garden in Maine and was proud of her beautiful vegetable garden. She was a member of the Beatrix Potter Society and often gave lectures and presented her vast collection of memorabilia. She also taught English as Second Language and Citizenship classes in night school. She will be fondly remembered and loved by all of the lives that she touched and the students that she lent guidance to.
Visitations will be held on Sunday, August 30, 2015 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (Off Rte 30), Wayland,
Family and friends are invited to go directly to her Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, August 31, 2015 at 10:00 am at the Good Shepherd Parish at St. Zepherins Church, 99 Main St (Rte 27), Wayland.
Interment in the Johnson family lot in Mt Auburn Cemetery will be private.
