Obituary

Augusta, GA – John Wallace went home to be with the Lord on August 18, 2015 after a battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Lake Park Baptist Church with Rev. Robert L. Gosey officiating. Interment to follow at Westover Memorial Park.

John was born on a farm in Millington, Maryland on October 28, 1928. He served three years in the United States Army at Fort Gordon, Georgia. During his military term he met the love of his life, his wife Sally, and they married on October 26, 1951. John went to work at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Lynnwood Division and then accepted a position under Civil Service at Fort Gordon, Georgia in the Communications and Electronics Division which he retired from after 38 years of service. Not being one to not work, John accepted a position with Boardman Oil Company which he worked for ten years before fully retiring. His later years were spent working with the Disaster Relief Team through Lake Park Baptist Church helping repair and rebuild homes damaged during floods, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. He was a Trustee at Lake Park Baptist for thirty plus years, was on the Maintenance, Building, and Grounds Committee for sixty years, and sang as Bass in the church choir. John loved golf, traveling, his gardens, and his church family.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years Sally Maddox Wallace; his daughter, Deborah Skelton (George) of Augusta; his close and loving sisters, Virginia Fleetwood of Millington, Maryland, and Dorothy Littleton of Delaware; numerous nieces and nephews; and by his granddogs, Petey and Cleo. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Bertha Wallace; his brothers, George, William, Paul, James, Bernard, Clarence, Charles, and Jessie; and by his sisters, Mable Wallace and Margaret Godwin.

Pallbearers will be Odell Sprouse, Tony Lively, Allen Russell, Dwayne MacIntosh, Bill Barron, and Tommy Mansfield.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening, August 21, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
